From what I can...This is in no way an easy answer.<br /><br />From what I can tell by doing research on the Web, there have been as many as 1,000 lighthouses in use around the United States over the last 200 years. However, the U.S. Coast Guard currently administers only about 400 lighthouses, with many of the rest now falling under the auspices of the National Park Service. According to a 1999 NPS inventory, there are 595 existing historic light stations (defined as "a station with a resident keeper and often consist[ing] of a complex of mutually-supporting structures"). But not all of those are currently operating.<br /><br />Since your question--"How many lighthouses (+/- 50) guard the shores of the United States today?"--implies that the lighthouses be operational, I'm going to have to go with the number 400, that covering the Coast Guard-supervised lighthouses.<br /><br />Cheers,<br />JeffJ.
